Advantages > Inland waterways
A simple river registration is possible under Belgian Flag: it permits you to exclusively navigate on the inland waterways. The double registration (maritime and river) is recommended if you plan to navigate on the maritime domain and on the Northern Europe canals. This avoids the fees for a temporary authorization which is expensive in these areas. A simple maritime registration allows also you navigate on the other inland waterways.
A European Directive dated of December 30, 2008 added some new technical requirements for boats navigating on the inland waterways. These new requirements concern the passenger carrying boats, floating machines and all boats over 20 meters (recreational crafts, pontoon, etc). As it is not possible to deliver a community certificate to all boats, deadlines for the issuance of certificates have been set based on the year of construction of the boat. However, if the certificate of gauging expires, the boat must immediately meet the new requirements (according to the appropriate measures of transition).

No registration tax is to be paid for river registration, except the waterway toll sticker according to the countries where you are navigating. A registration plate (with Belgian crown) comes with the river registration and must be fixed on the back of the boat.
